Exciting Actions at RoboFest 2012

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at SLIIT hosted RoboFest  2012 on 13th & 14th September 2012 at SLIIT Malabe Campus. The competition, open to school students and undergraduates island-wide, saw larger line-up of participants than those in previous years vying for exciting prizes.

RoboFest is SLIIT's annual robotic competition which aims to exhibit the Robot design talents of students from around the country. Participants must build a Robot that can perform a task according to the given criteria, which includes navigating their robot to the goal by detecting the arrows placed on the platform while avoiding obstacles. This year’s competition included categories for participants from universities and schools.

The contest for University Students consisted of a preliminary competition, in which 10 finalists were selected, to move to the final round, in which Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were awarded. The first prize winner was awarded Rs. 65,000, second prize Rs. 40,000 and third prize Rs. 20,000.

The School Competition was open to students from schools island-wide. Participants had to design and implement a mobile robot capable of navigating a play field along a given path. Winners of this category were awarded the following cash prizes; Rs. 50,000 (Gold), Rs. 25,000 (Silver), and Rs. 10,000 (Bronze).

The goal of ROBOFEST is to give school and undergraduate students the opportunity to design, build and familiarize themselves with new technologies in the field of robotics where all students will get the opportunity to excel and show their talents on the day of the competition.

The main sponsors for RoboFest are Dialog and MAS Holdings. Co-sponsors for the event are Dimo, Terraqua Kokawitta (Pvt) Ltd, KBSL, Vallibel Power Erathna PLC, Krab Protectors, D. B.
